My amateur radio activity is mostly on the public service side, through the Holland Amateur Radio Club and Ottawa County Emergency Management. You might also catch me at Field Day, or activating a state park for Parks on the Air. In 2024 I was appointed trustee of MiRATS, an online club for Michigan hams.
For public service work I carry either a Yaesu VX-8DR or a Baofeng DM-32UV. Field Day and Parks on the Air usually means breaking out my trusty Icom IC-728 - older but effective - paired with whichever antenna suits the situation. That collection currently runs from MFJ folded dipoles on 10m, 20m and 40m, to a G5RV, to my latest addition: a Wolf River Coils TIA Mini with a 17' telescoping whip. Power comes from either a gasoline generator or a Bioenno LiFePO4 battery depending on the deployment. I've also recently started experimenting with DMR and Allstar hotspots.
